Cat Chat: Life Update

Hello Gorgeous!

How has your new year been going? January seemed like the longest month EVER! But February is off to a bang because I can’t believe it is already Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday. This post is a little different because it is more of just a ‘chit chat’ to fill you in on whats been going on lately! I was trying to be creative with the title but I don’t know if it is just cheesy or not πŸ™‚

Things with school have been absolutely crazy (as usual!). It wouldn’t be so stressful, but I have been working on my resume/job applications like a maniac and it’s making me lose my mind! I find myself already asking ‘how many weeks until spring break??’ because I could use the week off!Β I am currently sitting in Starbucks studying for a critical care exam tomorrow and I am quickly losing my motivation to study. Personally I am not the biggest fan of learning about things related to the heart and that is the content for this exam. **At this point I have now taken the exam and it was fine! Much better than what I was expecting!**

I have been on a new workout regimen since I was home over Christmas break, so I started in early January. I used to never lift weights or anything, but my brother showed me a few things so now I feel more comfortable doing it on my own. I usually go to the gym 6-7 days a week. I always do at least 20-30 minutes of cardio (whether that is the treadmill, intervals, the stair stepper, or the elliptical) and then alternate between arms and legs. I try to do abs every other day or so. I have really been liking the structure it gives my schedule. I now plan my day around when I will work out instead of trying to fit it into my schedule. I have also been trying to eat healthier to compliment what I am doing in the gym. Not going to lie, this past Friday and Saturday were cheat days! I went to a Galentine’s Day party on Friday and definitely had a few treats and then had some of the leftover treats Saturday! Time to get back on track! I think I need to add more protein into my diet to keep me fuller, so I am on the hunt for some new ways to prepare meat because I am not the biggest meat eater. I am planning on making a post about some of favorite and easy recipes!

I think for Lent this year I am going to attempt to reply to all of my text message within 10 minutes of receiving them… Holy moly! For anyone who knows me well, will know that this will be incredibly challenging for me! I am not a texter to say the least! The only exceptions I am allowing myself are if I am in class or clinical where I cannot reply. I am thinking if I need to add something else to do or give up, but I’m not sure yet… any suggestions?

I just finished the 3rd season of How to Get Away With Murder and OMG! I want more! Sadly I’ll have to wait for the 4th season to come to Netflix because I can’t find it online anywhere! I guess I’ll just stick with my usual Riverdale and The Office until then. My roommates have been watching the Insidious movies and trying to get me to watch it with them. I end up screaming within the first 2 minutes into the movie and then spending the rest of the time plugging my ears and covering my eyes, so I don’t think it’s my cup of tea! I really want to see the Greatest Showman, partially because I’ve heard how amazing it is, but mainly because I am a sucker for Zac Efron πŸ™‚ He can do no wrong in my eyes!

Well that is my quick update on my life! If I can make it to Tuesday, then I’ll make it through the week! Have a happy Valentine’s Day, whether you’re celebrating with a romantic date, or hanging with some gal pals!

XOXO

One Year Blogiversary!

Hello Gorgeous!

On January 20, 2017 I posted my first ever blog post, which means… A Dash of Glitter just turned 1! Wow! Can you believe it? I don’t know about you, but it definitely does not feel like a year has gone by to me. As I reflect on the past year I can’t help but feel so lucky to have an outlet that allows me to grow as a writer!

I really hope that over the past year I have been able to connect with my readers and inspire them to have confidence in themselves whether that be through fashion, or relating to an experience that I have written about. That is something I have always wanted for my blog and it is one of the main reasons I started it. I want my posts to act as a ‘pick me up’ if you are having a bad day, or a reference if you are needing some outfit inspiration!

I have also been thinking about what I want to change for the future and how to improve A Dash of Glitter, and I want my audience’s input as well, so feel free to let me know your thoughts in a comment! A goal I am hoping to achieve in the next year is to produce even more quality content. I know with it being my last semester in school and graduation rapidly approaching, it’ll be hard to stick to a consistent schedule for posting, but I would like to post as much as I can while maintaining the quality of the posts. I would also like to talk to some of my friends and write about their experiences as well because I am most definitely not the only one with a voice that wants to share with others! I am hoping I can do this by not only talking with them about their different experiences, but also incorporating them into my fashion posts to represent their styles (not just my own for a change)!

I sincerely hope you guys have had as much fun this ‘blogging journey’ as I have! I want to produce content that you want to read while still maintaining the integrity of the posts, so I am always open to suggestions if you have them. I also really wanted to thank everyone that takes time out of their busy days to read my blog! I am extremely grateful for that. Here’s to many more years to come πŸ™‚

(Also sorry I’ve been MIA lately… Even though it’s only the first month of the semester, things are already crazy!)

XOXO

Catherine

PS: For those of you that have been requesting a fashion post geared towards guys, keep an eye out because it is coming! πŸ™‚

Stretching Your Style

Hello Gorgeous!

I’m back with a fashion post! I don’t know about you but after Christmas, I am ready for the cold weather to be gone, but sadly, it’ll be around for a couple more months!

My mom gave me the idea for this post. I am styling this cute plaid duster (or dust ruffle as I call it) from Altar’d State 4 different wintry ways! It’s always fun to see how many different ways you can wear 1 piece, or “stretch” your wardrobe! I can’t tell you the number of times I have bought something and then it just sits in my closet because I don’t know how to wear it. Now when I shop I try to ask myself “What do I already own to wear with this?” or “Do I need to get a top/bottom to wear this with?”. It doesn’t do me any good to buy a super cute piece and then hardly ever wear it, plus that’s a waste of money! This is the method I use to justify my purchases πŸ™‚

Side note, I know you’re probably tired of reading about Target (considering it’s almost in every post), but that store is my best friend when it comes to finding a top or bottom to go with something else I bought. I always end up finding the perfect thing to round out and complete an outfit, and usually for a little bit cheaper than other places! Charming Charlie’s is also a great and inexpensive place to check out if you need some accessories to complete a look!

Hope you enjoy!

Also all of these awesome photos were taken by my friend Katherine πŸ™‚

Gift Guide For Her 2017

Hello Gorgeous!

It is time for all the Christmas shopping to wrap up (get it?) since Christmas is less than a week away!!! So I thought I’d put together a few ideas in case you’re having a hard time finding inspiration for those last minute gifts πŸ™‚

First let’s start with some stocking stuffer ideas! Or these would be great if you need a few little things to go with a larger gift!

  • Bath and Body Works hand sanitizer– they are always on sale and who doesn’t carry this in their purse?
  • Oil blotters– this might sound odd, but these things are so stinking handy!
  • Nail polish– Essie is my usual ‘go to’ brand
  • Hot chocolate mixes– we always get these in our stockings and I love them! This is some thing I always like getting because it usually isn’t something I would buy for myself!
  • Travel sized hand lotion– again, everyone carries this in their purse! My personal favorite is called hand food by Soap and Glory, and you can find it at Target or Ulta!
  • Purse Charm– My sister just got me a tassel charm from Altar’d State and I love it! I think they are so cute and come in every color and style under the sun, so it will be easy to find one for anyone you are buying one for!

Now let’s move to the larger gift ideas!

  • Scarf– there are a ton on Target’s website and depending on where you live you can get larger, warmer ones, or a lightweight one!
  • Coffee mug– Target also has a bunch of cute mugs for under $10! You can make this a combo gift and throw in a few hot chocolate mixes too!
  • Throw blanket– Who doesn’t love getting warm and cozy under a soft throw blanket? Target has so many cute ones! (I promise I shop at other places besides Target!)
  • Slippers– I have 2 suggestions depending on your budget. I have a pair of UGG slippers and they are the best things ever! I love that they have an actual sole on the bottom so I can wear them outside if I need to, and they have lasted me years. They do an excellent job of keeping my tootsies warm πŸ™‚ Then my roommate also got me the cutest pair of sparkly pink slippers for my birthday from, guess where? TARGET! They are lighter than the UGG ones so they are nice for just slipping on in the morning to run downstairs and get my tea.
  • Christmas pajamas– I don’t know about you, but I am a sucker for matching pajama sets! I found some really cute ones at Target and I know Old Navy has a ton of options as well!
  • Phone Case– Phone cases are basically another accessory so they represent your personality and style! Mine is by the brand Casemate and it has been great and lasted a long time! There are a ton of options depending on your budget, but I found a really cute marble one from Nordstrom.
  • Candle– Bath and Body Works candles are my absolute favorite! Plus you hardly ever have to pay full price for them because there is always a sale going on.
  • Morphe eye shadow palette– These eye shadows are great quality and the price is right! There are so many palettes to choose from so you can find one that suits the person you are buying for, and they are now sold at Ulta and on Morphe’s website!
  • Tarte blush palette– Tarte has some of the best blushes and if you or someone you know has been wanting to try them, now is the perfect time! You get 4 blushes for $39, when normally you are paying $29 for 1!
  • Trinket tray– Francesca’s has the cutest little decorative dishes that I like to use for jewelry like rings or stud earrings! Perfect for any jewelry lover in your life!
  • Wine glass– As a college student who doesn’t already have a nice set of wine glasses, I think it would be so fun to get a set of cute wine glasses to use in my adult life! Target has a bunch of cute ones on their website!
  • Apple watch– okay, this is a big one! I have the series 2 and I love it! I use it all the time in clinicals for nursing school. Let me explain, I do not think everyone needs this or would find it useful, but if your job is similar to nursing where you cannot check your phone often throughout the day, I think you would like it. When I first got it, I did think it was kind of a waste, but once my clinicals started again for the semester, I couldn’t live without it!
  • Lounge wear/Workout clothes– Some of my favorite gifts to get are big comfy clothes! You can find things like this anywhere, depending on your budget! I have this one really fuzzy robe from Target, and a cute and comfy sweatshirt from American Eagle. Also have you checked out Target’s legging selection lately? They have really stepped up their workout clothes! I always feel more motivated to go for a run when I have cute workout clothes to wear πŸ™‚
  • Makeup storage– So this one is definitely geared towards someone who has a decent amount of makeup and would appreciate storing it in a place other than a bag! The Container Store has a ton of options for makeup storage depending on your needs and counter space, however I actually store my makeup in a shoe organizer. I use the organizer that hangs over my bathroom door with the clear pockets so I can still see all of my makeup and save my counter space!
  • Bullet journal and brush tip pens– So I have been trying to teach myself how to do the fancy hand lettering like you see in the videos on Instagram (that’s another story…) But my roommate got a bullet journal for her birthday and loves it! I think this would be so fun to receive as a gift!

I hope these ideas give you some inspiration for any last minute shopping you need to do! I told myself I was going to try to make this for boys and girls, but as I am going back and reading this that thought quickly went out the window! I can’t believe that Christmas is so close! It feels like just yesterday that it was Thanksgiving. Now that finals are done I am just trying to soak in all the Christmas cheer while it lasts!

Merry Christmas everybody!!!

XOXO

It’s the Holiday Season

Hello Gorgeous!

Sooo… Thanksgiving is officially over, it’s December, and now I don’t have to hide my Christmas spirit any longer! I can hardly contain my excitement for my favorite time of year! I thought I would share some of the ways that I get into the holiday spirit, even when I am still at school.

Putting Up Decorations- Nothing puts a pep in my step more than coming home to a house covered in Christmas decorations! Even just a simple strand of lights can make such a big difference. My roommates and I have icicle lights we hang on our balcony, and plenty of other decorations, including a tree, for the inside. If you’re trying to decorate but you’re on a budget, you should check out the dollar section at Target! There are some great finds there and it won’t break the bank!

Watching Christmas Movies-Β Some of my ‘go to’ movies are How the Grinch Stole Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, A House Without a Christmas Tree, and of course all of the Hallmark Christmas movies (as cheesy as they are!). What are some of your favorites? Not much beats curling up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate, a fire in the fireplace, and a good Christmas movie!

Looking at Christmas Lights- Christmas lights are just so stinking festive! I love getting in the car with Christmas music on the radio and driving around to different neighborhoods looking at all of the lights on the houses! Also in Fayetteville, they cover our downtown square with Christmas lights! When I say cover, I do mean cover! Basically every inch is outlined with lights, it’s magical! I could walk around there every night and be perfectly content πŸ™‚

Listening to Christmas Music- I’ll openly admit, I am one of ‘those’ people that’s been known to listen to Christmas music in July with no shame at all! It is just so happy and joyous, it instantly puts you in a good mood! I have it set for my alarm, which makes waking up early for clinicals slightly less depressing.

Baking Christmas Cookies- I understand that not everyone is a baker, but I feel like it just goes with the season to bake! Some of the best memories I have are helping my mom make Christmas cookies and arguing with my brother and sister about who got to stir in the eggs and break the yolks with the spatula. Now, my love for baking doesn’t really go with my diet, so in order to feed my baking obsession, I have to take a lot of what I bake to friends and neighbors! No wonder they usually answer the door when they see it’s me knocking πŸ™‚

I hope doing these things help you get into the holiday spirit! I know that this can be a stressful time of year, with finals and the end of the year approaching quickly! Remember the reason for the season πŸ™‚

You Are Enough

Hello Gorgeous!

I have been in a little bit of a rut lately, and this got me thinking and praying. I was trying to pinpoint exactly what was making me feel down. Things have been busy and stressful with school but that wasn’t it. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, until this past week in adoration when it came to me. I have been placing too much dependence on other things besides myself and God.

I have been noticing lately that it seems like anything and everything is about measuring our worth and validating ourselves. It’s so easy to compare ourselves and our lives to the people we see on social media or TV. Since when did the number of likes we get on a photo give us validation or become a measure of our worth? If you place your happiness solely in the hands of others, you will never be fully happy. I remember in high school when I would be so excited if my Instagram photo got over 100 likes, and if it didn’t, I started that slippery slope of thoughts like, “Maybe that isn’t a flattering picture of me” or “Maybe this isn’t a cute enough picture to share”.

Just in case no one has told you lately, you are enough. You are enough just the way you are. Even if you are in sweat pants that are 6 years old with holes in them and haven’t washed your hair in 3 days, you are enough. Do not let other people influence how you value yourself. If you are putting forth your best effort and working toward your goals in life, nobody can take that away from you (even if they don’t like your Instagram photo :)).

Ladies, if a guy is being a jerk to you and not giving you the time of day, then guess what? That is his loss! Don’t feel like that is a reflection on you. Do not feel like it’s because there is anything wrong with you. Don’t think that it was somehow your fault that he couldn’t see what a gem you were. He probably doesn’t deserve your attention! Trust me, I know that it is so much easier said than done, but this is something that I have struggled with and a lot of my friends have as well. I mean of course this goes for guys and girls, I just have a better understanding from the girls perspective! Plus, not to make assumptions, but college boys are stupid!

So overall if you only remember this one thing out of this post, remember that no matter what stage of life you’re in, college, high school, married, graduate school, single, trying to get a job, or maybe just trying to study for a test :), you are enough. Hard work and perseverance will pay off. Just be patient with yourself and know that you are worth it. God’s got your back!

That’s all for now! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

XOXO,

Catherine

PS: It’s almost Christmas time!!!!!!

Why I Fell in Love With Baton Twirling

Hello Gorgeous! As many of you know, I was a baton twirler. I started twirling when I was around 15, twirling for my high school and for a year in college. I wanted to write this because this sport has had such an impact on my life, and is so much more than just a hobby or after school activity.

I don’t know where I would be in life if I had not discovered baton twirling. I likely would not have attended the University of Arkansas, and it so weird to say that because I cannot imagine myself anywhere else now. I would not be the person I am today without it. Twirling taught me and showed me passion and hard work can take you further than I could’ve ever imagined.Β  Through twirling I was able to find my inner confidence, however performing alone in front of like 1,000 of your high school peers will kind of force you to do that :). Who knew a metal stick and a pretty costume could make a person so happy? The feeling of accomplishment, excitement, and fulfillment that I got after I completed a routine that I had been working so hard on is almost indescribable. My pain tolerance has increased significantly from all the countless injuries, including some pretty impressive bruises, sprains, strains, and maybe a few black eyes (RIP my bottom teeth). Because of twirling pageants, I feel confident during interviews and talking in a professional manner because I trust that I can speak with poise and have stories that can relate to just about anything!

Most of all, I will be forever grateful to baton twirling because without it, I would have never met the friends and coaches that are like a family to me. We started as teammates and now we are best friends. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet so many incredible athletes from all over the country, attending camps and competitions in so many different states. Spending every afternoon and weekend in a gym at practice or sitting in the bleachers at a competition will form the types of bonds that cannot be broken.

I will never forget the time I was at nationals and a large crystal fell off the front of my strut costume and, unfortunately, we did not have any E6000 with us (rookie mistake!). Costume and crystal in hand, I knocked on a stranger’s door at the hotel because they had a ‘good luck’ poster on the front. I was instantly welcomed into their room and offered an endless amount of help for the minor repair. That is what makes the twirling community so unique. There is always support available, whether it comes from a teammate or someone sitting next to you in the bleachers at a contest!

These are just a few pictures of some of the wonderful times I have had twirling! The only pictures not in twirling attire are from one of my coaches, Kayli Mickey’s wedding!

Well that’s all for now!

XOXO,

Catherine
